In the state of Florida, the contractor has to have a license and permit. Make sure he has those things, and then you’ll know he’s on the up and up.

Ask for references
Answer by Dave C
Ask to see copies of his liability insurances, ask for his CIS or UTR number, and ask if he is a member of any trade bodies – Constructionline, CHAS, SafeContractor, NHBC, etc and check them out with that trade body – they usually have lists of their approved contractors online.
Then ask for references from previous customers. If they are a good contractor they will be happy to give you almost open access to their previous customers.
Lastly do a search on the company name through a search engine. If they have had any health and safety incidents or court cases that will show up.
Other than that – trust your “feel” towards the contractor.

A few things you need to do;
1. research online go to google type
a. Rippoff.com
b. complaints.com
2. You also may check with BBB ( Not a government agency) but they may have some information,
either he is a member in good standing or may have complaints. It means nothing if he is a
member other than paying the dues.
3. Most important- does he have any referrals, letters of recomendations from other customers.
4. Trust your intuition.

Linda, the easiest way to find out if a contractor is reputable is by calling your local area Chamber of Commerce. They will have all the information you will need.
