Are buying Savings Bonds today even worth it anymore?
Hi,my name is Anne,I did the following:
Question: Are buying Savings Bonds today even worth it anymore?
When I was a kid, the amount of interest a savings bond would make over time was pretty good. Today it seems like these new bonds are just garbage in comparison. Will the dollar even be around when they mature with the way the country is going? Will they even be honored? Opinions please?
I’m thinking of savings bonds, that typically my grandmother would buy us for birthdays. It’s just a tradition my family had, but I think its not worth it anymore.

I am sure they will be honoured. You don’t want to buy bonds if interest rates and inflation appear to be rising (which they do right now). You need to buy assets like shares, commodities etc.

I don’t know if you’re Canadian or not but here in Canada the rates suck. I’m contemplating cashing them in when they mature so I can put that money into other investments (I think even my savings account pays higher interest believe it or not).

Are they worth it, …yes! They are the safest form of investment you will get, and they won’t go to zero. The down side is they are very low rate of yield. They are good for gift giving as your grand mother did, but poor as an investment as investments go.

Savings bonds are basically a risk free investment, so it depends on what your investing horizon is. If you’re older you want to have more of your portfolio in bonds because you can have a pretty good idea of what your income will be each year.
If you’re younger and have a longer time until your retirement, then you want to invest in leveraged ETFs. You can get about a 197% return every year if you do it properly.
And yes, the dollar will be around. This country has survived a revolution, a civil war, two world wars, multiple depressions, the assassinations of four presidents, and thirteen days of staring down a nuclear armed power. This isn’t a great time, but we’ve been through worse,
