Q&A: Regarding speaking out against government — Why O.K for Colonists but not at Health Care Town Hall meetings?
The early American colonists had a lot to say about British tyranny and new plans to tax them and abuse what they knew were their God-given liberties. And when they spoke out, they were not told that they had to be “polite” about it or else their argument would automatically fail in it’s merits because they raised their voices and therefore lacked correctness or credibility.
So why now are the critics of Americans who are speaking out at Health CareTown Hall meetings claiming that it is “un-American” to speak out with any vigor or emotion? It is TOTALLY American to voice your opinion. And the reason that so many have been brought to anger is because they know their voice is NOT BEING HEARD in Washington. When they have an opportunity to see their Congressional Representative face-to-face, they feel this is their one key opportunity to get their point across because writing emails in a form letter or making calls to Congressional aids JUST DOESN’T WORK. What motivates most Congressmen seems to be their political cronies in Washington, and sucking up to the power base established by the Presidency and the Speaker of the House and Senate Majority Leader — NOT their constituents back home. According to the polls, the majority of Americans believe the biggest problem is OVERSPENDING by government and NOT that tax payers need to pay more money to stimulate the economy or to build bigger government.
While peaceful debate is always preferable, would the early American colonists ever gotten anywhere if they had only engaged in peaceful debate with the King or his colonial leaders and troops? And didn’t the early American colonists TRY to engage in diplomatic debate for years before they realized it wasn’t working?
And when did Nancy Pelosi become the Keeper and Definer of what was supposedly “American” and what was “Un-American”? Or is she playing a game of rhetoric which could be simplified as: “ME always right. YOU always wrong. TA-DA! I win again. [Give up, you UN-AMERICAN Pig Dogs! ME own Congress now!]”
