Q&A: Can you give me some tips for time management?
Everything I do (even routine things) tend to take forever. Most of the time things don’t get done. I don’t have a lot of time on my hands. What can I do to survive?

Some of my routines (things I would like to do)
Cleaning my house
Doing laundry
Bill paying
Cooking
Visiting the Salon
Reading for pleasure
Taking in a movie (occassionally)
Reading emails
Etc.

Tips please.

Make a “To DO” list….also have a friend that you call and tell them your list for the day…then have them check in on you throughout the day

First do a calculation on what you do in a given day and how much time you spend on each project. That will first give you an idea of how you spend your time in a day. Get an organizer and allot a specific amount of time for each project. There are some excellant resourses for time management at some of the college websites.

Do the unpleasant tasks first and then reward yourself by doing a “fun” task in between the ones you don’t enjoy doing. Make a list of what you have to do each day. make it the night before or first thing in the morning. Write things in order of importance or priority, with the bottom of your list being things that can be put off. The top of the list should be the most time consuming and most important. Try alloting a time for each task and then moving on – if possible – when that time is up. For example, clean house – 1 hour – read – 20- minutes – cook dinner – 30 minutes etc. Most of the time people procrastinate because they are avoiding or because they have difficulty getting started and sustaining motivation. Sometimes depression is the underlyiing cause for this. Good luck!

Commit to doing only one important thing a day. That way you will feel like you have acomlished something by completing a task. Positive reinfrocemnt also works – reward yourself in some way for completing a task.

To do lists and action plans are critical. You have to make a plan ie. have a laundry day, set a schedule etc. Easy to say, sometimes tough to implement if you aren’t sure where to start. Check out http://www.ultimateTimeManagement.com . I ended up buying that abook a few months ago and it helped tremendously.
